3 Stars Falls apart during play.
My 4 year old son has all the new mini playsets. (I bought them at the same time.) They fall apart and are very cheaply made. The value is in the figure. This Deluxe Vehicle set is thicker, but it also falls apart into several pieces. At least with Legos kids can snap them back with little effort; this is a little more difficult. I probably spend more time snapping it back together than he does playing with the toy.
3 Stars Not bad, as long as you know what you’re getting
The Super Hero Squad series is still trying to make the next step into becoming a full featured collectible series. The figures have been around for a bit now, but accessories have been few and far between. This is one of the few that has been released, and even now is in limited availability. I found this before Christmas in a brick-and-mortar store, but have not seen it recently. Always research your price before buying, ESPECIALLY if ordering through a third-party seller through Amazon. At the time of this review, the third-party price is more than double of what it retails for, so be careful.
As for the product itself, it is a good addition to the line. The vehicle comes in two pieces that when used together form the “mobile command center.” The back piece clicks into place at one joint similar to a trailer hitch and while simple enough to do, may give some younger kids issues with lining the pieces up. My three-year-old usually wants to push the two pieces together but the back piece needs to be raised up slightly to connect, resulting in “daddy, can you do this?” several times during playtime.
Some have criticized durability. While not at the level of the outstanding Fisher-Price Imaginext products (which this series can be considered a direct competitor) the unit holds up well. Granted, the doors of the back piece come off pretty easily, but they snap right back in. They’re meant to give way easily - if they didn’t they’d break and then you’d have a durability issue. Otherwise the unit is solid, but still plastic - make expectations realistic. It will survive drops on the carpet or even hard wood floors, but slam it hard on concrete and it will break like most anything else made of plastic.
The front part operates alone as a wheeled vehicle and with a button press converts into a winged vehicle. The button isn’t hard to press and right in the front of the vehicle, so easy for young children to operate, and the wings click back into place to turn back into the wheeled vehicle.
The back part works as the “command unit” with three fold-down door panels, and one side opens completely to reveal the inside. Nothing special here, however it is big enough to store the motorcycle that comes with the set.
The set comes with two figures (Iron Man and Wolverine) and the motorcycle mentioned before which Wolverine can fit on. While the Iron Man figure has a nice look to it (a glossy shine, unlike other Iron Man figures in the line), both Iron Man and Wolverine are some of the most common figures in the series, and unless you’re starting with this will likely be duplicates (I think we’re up to 4 Iron Men and 5 Wolverines.) The set also includes a spring-loaded missle-launching device that can fit on either piece, but the missle does not launch far and should not be considered a safety hazard, at least from shooting it (it is a possible choking hazard however, and can probably be thrown away - keeping the launcher - without any real loss.)
Overall, a fun toy, but not a “must have”, especially if paying more than retail.
1 Stars Not worth it
This was the one item my son asked Santa for, so I bought it despite the lack of reviews. It was much smaller and cheaper than what I’d expected, especially considering what I paid. He enjoys it, but it always falls apart and is just plain cheap.
4 Stars My Kid Loves It
If there’s one thing I have become an expert on within the past six months, it is the famed Super Hero Squad. This animated series on the Cartoon Network involves the adventures of Iron Man, Thor, Hulk, Wolverine, and a plethora of other Marvel Superheroes that battle against mainly three Supervillians. Dr. Doom, M-O-D-O-K (I still don’t know what that stands for.) and Abomination. Others sprinkle their mayhem in there every so often on the series.
This toy, the Deluxe Vehicle used as a space for the heroes to make computations and keep track of their enemies and play around with the minature version of their action figures. Wolverine Super Hero Squad Wolverine Blob Iceman Colossus for example. It’s also big enough to fit one of various vehicles the heroes own Jada Marvel Super Hero Squad 5.5 Inches Iron Man as an example.
Plus, it has a detachable cab section which one of the figures that come with the set can fit into. One can zoom around the floor in their room or wherever. Then, with the press of a button, shwoop! the wheels flip out to form two wings to seemingly make it fly thru the air, giving the kids a chance to make their imagination go wild1
I’ve read one review that it was shoddily put together. While it’s certainly not made of reinforced steel, it is the typical thickened plastic toy we’re all used to (the ones we as parents had kids-me being in my 30s.) So yes, it may require a bit of repair if a child is a bit too rough.
Now the price. As of today, (Dec. 30, 2009) the price for it, new or used, is almost $60.00!! I’m not sure why in the world the price jumped that much. I will fully agree it is not worth that much. When I bought it, it was half that price which is much more reasonable.
I have not checked on ebay or the like, so I’m not sure if it’s just discontinued or what, but it’s a fun toy for the little ones.
So, I wish all thos who own it or purchase it, to find a great deal first, and watch as your kiddies enjoy flying around the house and acting out their own adventures.
Thanks for reading, enjoy!
